Bobby Quad by Channel Islands
Bobby Quad
Bobby Martinez asked Channel Islands to make him the shortest board possible so he could surf the small waves of the California summer ocean. He also told them it had to be a quad and meet his high performance surfing needs. Bobby's usual shortboards are 5'8", but for this customized quad fin board he knew he needed to go down to 5'2". Bobby felt that by shortening the rail line and distributing the volume across the width, he would be able to skate over the flat sections more easily and still be able to maintain his speed while still making the hard turns he is known for.
The Bobby Quad has a weak entry rocker and a flat area in the engine part of the board (center to chest), which allows for quick take-off and speedy gliding through flat sections of the wave. The tail rocker and bottom concave are designed to help the board do its job. The tail rocker is accentuated and the generous double concave gives the board lift while riding, allowing for fast down-the-line surfing even in weak waves. Combined with the wide swallow tail, it creates overwhelming speed and holds firmly during quick direction changes.
This model is designed to be ridden 3" to 6" shorter and 1/4" to 1/2" wider than a standard shortboard. For reference, the Bobby's dimensions are 5'2 x 19 x 25/16. However, other team riders have given us feedback that the Bobby Quad is a versatile board that can be turned up to catch more waves and still be fun to ride. The rails are clean cut, so try adding thickness rather than width to get the float you want. As for the fins, we recommend using your favorite quad template.
Bobby Quad is recommended for these people!
This is a hybrid shortboard recommended for beginners to advanced surfers. The concept of this board is to ride it much shorter than your height, but beginners can increase the number of takeoffs and have fun surfing by riding it with a slightly larger board. Intermediate and above surfers will be able to increase the success of highly rotating actions by riding it short, even when the waves are small or weak.
The wave sizes and conditions that the Bobby Quad can handle
The best size is relatively small, around the knees to head, and it really shines in slow waves with flat sections, but it can be ridden in all conditions.
Recommended fins for Bobby Quad
There are no fins specifically for this board, so you can use any quad fin you like. If you have an Al Merrick 5-fin set, that should fit perfectly. Modern fins seem to be better than classic templates.
