FISHBEARD by Channel Islands

Fishbeard

Al Merrick's Fishbeard is a model that began development after Parker Coffin casually commented, "What if we made the Neckbeard 2 look like a retro keel twin fish?" Furthermore, by placing a vivid 80s logo that was dug up from a warehouse, the board has a very unique atmosphere. The appearance is a mass of nostalgia and unexpectedness, but while maintaining the good acceleration of the Neckbeard 2, the deep swallow and twin fin setting makes it easier to work the tail. Although it does not have the maneuverability of a high-performance board, it is a well-balanced board with moderate rotation and acceleration.

Parker and Fishbeard

Fishbeard is recommended for these people!

The Fishbeard is a board that can be ridden as a main board by beginners to advanced riders. It is also recommended for those who want to ride a high-performance twin fin board that feels like a tri-fin, or for those who have never ridden a twin fin before or are hesitant about twin fins.

What wave sizes and conditions does Fishbeard handle?

The Fishbeard is a step-down groveler type for knee to head-sized waves. For intermediate and above, it will hold well even overhead.

Recommended fins for Fishbeard

The best match is the "AM Keel Fin", which was created by improving the keel fin design found in the Channel Islands archives. However, no matter what twin fin you add, it will be a different ride and it will be fun. If you use an upright fin, the rotation will be further improved. On the other hand, if you use a classic keel fin, the sense of drive will increase. The AM Keel Fin is positioned just in between, so I would like you to use it first.

What is the difference between twin fins and tri fins?

In a twin fin setup without a center fin, the axis of rotation is closer to the rails on both sides, not the center of the board. You turn with the image of using the fins and rails together, but since it is less likely to go straight, many people are surprised at how sensitive it is to turn compared to tri-fins. At first, it gives the impression that it moves a lot, but rather than turning sharply around the tail, it feels like the tail is sliding left and right. Another attraction of twin fins is that you can make quick rail-to-rail transitions and ride as if licking the face of the wave. Twin fins are less stable than tri-fins, so be careful not to put too much force into them. The Fishbeard's tail outline is narrower like a modern shortboard, which compensates for the stability of the ride and allows you to make turns with a more drive-like feel.

Comparison of Fishbeard and CI Fish

The CI Fish has a wider outline overall and a more classic fish shape. The ride is a little more relaxed and cruisey, and it is suitable for surfing with a relaxed arc. The Fishbeard is an improved version of the Neckbeard 2 with a twin fin, so the outline is thinner and it has better performance. Even though it is the same twin fin, it is a very different type of board.
